It has been six years since contemporary artist Tomoko Konoike held a large-scale exhibition, and during that time she has reconsidered the value of art. After experiencing the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake she came to believe that all man-made things were a form of ¡°primordial violence.¡± Previous works expressed a love of nature, but Konoike¡¯s new work is conceptually darker, questioning why civilization must destroy the natural world. Her new mixed-media works ¡ª including a 20-meter-high painting on stitched leather ¡ª will be exhibited at the Kanagawa Prefectural Gallery.
