To commemorate the 10th anniversary of The Museum of Ceramic Art, Hyogo, ¡°Celadon Now¡± celebrates the traditions of Chinese ceramics through its influence on contemporary Japanese artists.
Celadon ware, with its distinctive milky jade-green glaze, was first introduced to Japan around the 12th century, and has long been popular in Japanese crafts, often the choice of ceramics for tea-ceremony vessels.
The highlight of this exhibition is the collection of modern works by 11 Japanese artisans, including those of Mineo Okabe (1919-1990), who is often credited for pioneering the evolvement of traditional ceramics in their embrace of contemporary design.
