Despite fame during his time, Giovanni Francesco Barbieri (1591-1666), best known as Guercino, was later dismissed and forgotten as artists began to reject academic traditions and genres shifted. Since the mid-20th century, however, there has been a rediscovery and re-appreciation of his Italian Baroque work, with a number of large-scale exhibitions having taken place in Europe in the recent years.

This is the first major showing of Guercino¡¯s paintings in Japan, with 44 of his works, including one belonging to the National Museum of Western Art.
