Japan is well-known for its dolls, producing edgy urban vinyl, cute soft toys, manga figurines and even therapy dolls for lonely senior citizens. This ¡°Doll Culture Exhibition¡± at Tokyo¡¯s Roppongi Hills¡¯ Tokyo City View observation deck, however, looks at old-school fashion dolls, which should make quite a few visitors feel very nostalgic.
In a blend of art, fashion and fun, this exhibition presents five types of hugely popular fashion dolls in a setting specially designed by art director Sebastian Masuda. Masuda, who is renowned for his kawaii fashion brand 6%Dokidoki and for his wacky art direction of pop idol Kyary Pamyu Pamyu¡¯s ¡°PonPonPon¡± video, has put Barbie, Super Dollfie, Licca-chan, Jenny and Blythe in displays themed on words such as ¡°kawaii¡± or ¡°gorgeous.¡± Taking place at Tokyo City View observation deck, means visitors can also enjoy a great view of Tokyo.
Visitors also have the opportunity to buy limited-edition official goods to give their own dolls a new look. Each brand will be offering outfits and accessories, making this exhibit a must-see for doll enthusiasts.
