After being detained by the Gestapo for his involvement with the Resistance during World War II, Jean Fautrier (1898-1964) began working on the series ¡°Hostages¡± as a response to the horrors that took place in German-occupied France.
In expressing this dark theme, he developed the unusual technique of gluing layers of paper onto his canvases to create a grotesque skinlike texture on which to paint. This exhibition brings together close to 90 of Fautrier¡¯s works, including earlier pieces and 10 paintings from his famous ¡°Hostages¡± series. One of the highlights is a pair of sculptures that help illustrate Fautrier¡¯s shift in style from the figurative to the more abstract; May 24-July 13.
