Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney¡¯s stemwinder made him the star of the show last week at the World Economic Forum¡¯s annual gathering of the glitterati in Davos.
His declaration that the world is experiencing ¡°a rupture, not a transition¡± has been heralded as breathtaking truth-telling, a stark acknowledgement that U.S. President Donald Trump seeks to rework the global order and those who aim to preserve it must resist. Acquiescence, whether in the form of flattery, bribery, distractions or indifference is not an option.
Carney has been widely applauded for speaking truth to power, although he mentioned neither Trump nor the United States by name. He was nevertheless uninvited from Trump¡¯s Board of Peace and threatened with 100% tariffs on all its exports to the U.S. if Canada followed through on a trade deal reached during Carney¡¯s visit to Beijing earlier in the month. Trump first applauded the agreement¡¯s announcement, but last week warned that he would not tolerate Canada becoming ¡°a ¡®Drop Off Port¡¯ for China to send goods and products into the United States.¡±
