On Monday, Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi addressed the public to announce she will dissolve the Lower House and trigger a snap election for Feb. 8. In her address, Takaichi acknowledged the risk to her political future and sought to explain the reasoning behind her gambit while charting a course forward for the country.
The prime minister says the unusual move ¡ª calling an election in the dead of winter and on such short notice ¡ª is necessary for her and the newly formed coalition government to be put to a vote before the Japanese public, given that the previous election in 2023 was under a different leadership structure. Takaichi noted that she became the country¡¯s leader through an internal party presidential election, and that shortly thereafter, the ruling coalition switched from her Liberal Democratic Party and Komeito to the LDP and the Japan Innovation Party.
Takaichi is seeking a fresh start, setting the conditions for her administration to lead the country effectively with a direct mandate from the people that is based on a clear understanding of not only her policy direction, but the platform of the LDP-JIP coalition.
