Mizuho Financial Group is expanding its corporate and investment banking business in South Korea, India and Australia as part of its ambition to become one of the top 10 global dealmakers, according to a senior executive.

The bank is seeking an equity capital market (ECM) license and plans to bolster its stock underwriting team in Seoul to capitalize on South Korea¡¯s booming semiconductor market, said Joris Dierckx, head of banking for Asia-Pacific. Japan¡¯s third-largest financial group also intends to hire in Australia and India to capture demand for bonds and loans, Dierckx said.

Mizuho has been boosting its dealmaking business around the world, through moves such as its acquisitions of Greenhill in the U.S. and Avendus Capital in India. In Asia, it aims to become the top investment bank in as soon as five years, mainly by strengthening its equity underwriting and M&A advisory operations.
